Introduction to Guangzhou energy storage hydropower plant project

Guangzhou energy storage hydropower plant (hereinafter referred to as Guangzhou energy storage power plant) is subordinate to China Southern power grid peak shaving and frequency modulation power generation company. It is located in Conghua, Guangzhou, which is famous for its “hot spring and litchi”, and is 120 kilometers away from Guangzhou. With a total installed capacity of 2400mw, Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Plant is the first pumped storage project with high head and large capacity designed and constructed by China, and it is also the largest pumped storage power plant in the world at present.

The pivotal project of Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Plant is composed of upper reservoir, lower reservoir, water diversion system, Underground Powerhouse Caverns, outgoing line yard, etc. the natural drop between upper and lower reservoirs is more than 500 meters.

The whole project is constructed in two phases. Eight 300MW reversible pumped storage units are installed, with a design head of 535m and a design comprehensive efficiency of 76%. The project was started on may25,1989, the first unit generated power on june29,1993, and was fully completed in june2000. In the process of project construction, Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Plant takes the lead in implementing the “owner responsibility system”, “bidding system” and “construction supervision system” in China. In order to summarize and popularize the experience and achievements obtained in the project construction, the Ministry of energy and the Ministry of electric power held two engineering construction management experience exchange meetings in Guangzhou Pumped Storage Power Plant in january1991 and june1995.
